The term box-to-box midfielder was very popular in English Premier League football from the 1990s to the 2000s. Usually players like this can be found in teams that use 4-4-2, 3-5-2, or 4-3-3 formations.
A box-to-box midfielder or a player with good ability to attack and defend should have extra energy. In the past, when the term is still popular, there are famous names such as Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, or Steven Gerrard.
